Predloga:F1 race report infobox Velika nagrada ZDA 2005 je bila deveta dirka Formule 1 v sezoni 2005. Odvijala se je 19. junija 2005 na dirkališču Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Dirka je bila zelo kontroverzna, ker je dirkalo le šest namesto običajnih dvajset dirkačev. Vseh štirinajst moštev, ki jih s pnevmatikami opremlja Michelin je po ogrevalnem krogu iz varnostnih razlogov zaradi neustreznih pnevmatik za nov asfalt zapeljalo v bokse in odstopilo. Tako so dirkala le tri moštva, ki jih s pnevmatikami opremlja Bridgestone, Ferrari, Minardi in Jordan.

Po več počenih pnevmatikah pred dirko, najbolj spektakularno na Toyoti Ralfa Schumacherja med petkovim prostim treningom, je Michelin svojim moštvom svetoval, da s pnevmatikami, ki jih je dobavil, ni mogoče varno dirkati. FIA, Svetovna avtomobilistična zveza, ni dovolila postavitve dodatne šikane na ravnini, ker bi bilo ti zelo nepravično do Bridgestonovih moštev, ki imajo ustrezne pnevmatike. Michelinova moštva po neuspešnem poskusu dogovora s FIO zaradi varnosti niso sodelovala na dirki.

Od šestih sodelujočih, je zmagal Michael Schumacher s Ferrarijem. S tem rezultatom si je opazno opomogel na prvenstveni lestvici, saj je napredoval na tretje mesto, vodilna dva dirkača v prvenstvu pa nista dirkala.[1] Ustvarjena situacija je za Formulo 1 pomenila ogromno negativne publicitete, še posebej v ZDA, trgu kjer se je Formula 1 poskušala uveljaviti v zadnjih dvajsetih letih.[2]

V petek 17. junija 2005, med popoldanskim prostim treningom, je Ralf Schumacher s Toyoto v ovinku 13 doživel hudo nesrečo zaradi počene zadnje leve pnevmatike. To je bilo že drugo leto zapored, ko je doživel nesrečo pri visoki hitrosti v ovinku 13, prejšnjo leta 2004 z Williamsom. Dejstvo, da sta se obe nesreči primerili istem dirkaču z istim tipom Michelinovih pnevmatik, je bilo vzrok za zaskrbljenost.[3] Ovinek 13 na dirkališču Indianapolis Motor Speedway je zelo hiter in v Formuli 1 edinstven, in povzroča velike bočne sile.[4] Ta pritisk lahko povzroči, da se stranski del pnevmatike neobičajno deformira.[5]

Korespondenca med Michelinom in FIO

Predstavnika Michelina, Pierre Dupasquier in Nick Shorrock sta 18. junija v pismu direktorju FIE Charlieju Whitingu sporočila, da ne poznajo vzroka počene pnevmatike Ralfa Schumacherja ter, da so če dirkalnike v ovinku 13 ne upočasnijo, njihove pnevmatike nevarne za dirkanje.[8]

Whiting je v odgovoru v nedeljo, 19. junija, izrazil presenečenje, da Michelin ni pripeljal rezervnih setov pnevmatik, predlagal da bi Michelinovim moštvom sporočilo varno hitrost v ovinku 13 ter ponudil nadzor nad izstopno hitrostjo v zavoju in kaznovanje prekoračitve le-te s strani Michelinovih dirkačev. Komentiral je tudi več rešitev, ki so jih predlagala moštva. Vztrajal je, da bi uporaba pnevmatik, ki so čez noč prispele v ZDA, pomenila kazen, dodatna šikana pa ne pride v poštev - v primeru spremembe steze dirka ne bi mogla šteti za prvenstvo. Whitingov je v kratkem odgovoru je ponovil, da takšne rešitve niso mogoče, ter dal moštvom možnost omejitve hitrosti skozi ovinek 13, uporabe novih pnevmatik brez kazni, predlagal pogostejše menjave pnevmatik, kar bi bilo sprejemljivo, če jih skrbi varnost dirkačev (čeprav je dopustil možnost, da bi bila moštva, ki se odločijo za predlagano možnost, morda vseeno kaznovana z besedami: »Če bodo tehnični delegat in komisarji ugotovili, da je bila vsaka menjava pnevmatik potrebna, kazni ne bo.«)[9] [[Image:Fisichella (Renault) qualifying at USGP 2005.jpg|left|thumb|200px|Fisichella na kvalifikacijah]]

Poskusi kompromisa

Paul Stoddart, lastnik Minardi-Coswortha, moštva s pnevmatikami Bridgestone, je v sredo 22. junija objavil obrazložitev toka dogodkov do dirke. Če so bili prejšnji poskusi kompromisa javno objavljeni v več virih, so bila pogajanja tik pred dirko javnosti neznana. Stoddart je opisal sestanek okolij 10:00 na dan dirke, na katerega so bili povabljeni direktor dirkališča Tony George, predstavnika Michelina Dupasquier in Shorrock, Bernie Ecclestone, šefi vseh moštev. Prisotni so bili vsi, razen šefa Ferrarija, Jeana Todta.[7]

Alonso na kvalifikacijah

Po Stoddartovem pričevanju je sestanek potekal sledeče: predstavnika Michelina sta podala svoje stališče, da njihove pnevmatike ne zagotavljajo varnega dirkanja skozi celotno dirko, in zahtevala, da Bridgestonova moštva, ki sta jih predstavljala Stoddart in Jordanov Colin Kolles, podprejo postavitev dodatne šikane v ovinku 13. Prisotni so razpravljali in zavrnili ređitev FIE, da bi imeli Michelinovi dirkači v omenjenem ovinku omejitev hitrosti zaradi potencialne nevarnosti nesreče. Podobno so zavrnili tudi možnost postanka vsakih deset krogov, tako da so kot najboljšo rešitev izbrali postavitev dodatne šikane, in tehničnim predstavnikom naročili, naj pripravijo načrte za njeno postavitev. Bernie Ecclestone se je javil, da se bo posvetoval z Todtom, ki se ni odeležil sestanka, in predsednikom FIE Maxom Mosleyem, ki ni pripotoval na dirko, ter poročal, ko bo imel njuna stališča.[7]

Ecclestone se je vrnil približno ob 10:55 in obvestil prisotne, da se Jean Todt ne strinja z dodatno šikano z argumentom, da je to problem Michelina, ne njegov. Todt je kasneje zanikal, da je o tem kdaj podal stališče, toda tudi povedal, da se ne bi strinjal s postavitvijo šikane.[10] Nadalje je Ecclestone poročal, da je Max Mosley poudarl, da v primeru kakršnih koli sprememb na stezi, dirka ne bi mogla šteti za prvenstvene točke.[7]

Načrt šefov moštev

Skupina je po Stoddartovo nadaljevala z novimi predlogi za rešitev nastale situacije, tudi neprvenstveno dirko, ali dirko kjer Michelinovi dirkači ne bi prejeli točk, celo tudi dirko, kjer bi le Michelinovi dirkači peljali skozi novopostavljeno šikano, toda na koncu so se strinjali za neprvenstveno dirko, ki bi jo odpeljali brez Ferrarija, če bi bilo to potrebno.[11] Toda ignoriranje navodil FIE in izpeljava tašne dirke bi povzročila umik osebja FIE, zato je skupina postavila delegati za zapolnitev več pomembnih položajev, tudi direktorja dirke namesto Charlieja Whitinga in voznika varnostnega avtomobila namesto Bernda Maylanderja. Šefom moštev so svetovali naj priporočijo svojim moštvom in dirkačem, da naj se obnašajo častno v interesu dirke za gledalce, saj v odsotnosti komisarjev in tehnične opreme FIE ne bi mogli zagotoviti spoštovanja tehničnih pravil.[11]

Nadaljevali so s predstavitvijo svojega načrta dvajsetim dirkačim. Glede stališča dirkačev Stoddart napiše: »Če ne morem zagotoviti, da so se prav vsi dirkači strinjali z predlaganim nalrtom, pa lahko povem, da noben od dirkačev ni ugovarjal.« Ferrarijeva dirkača nista izrazila svojega stališča, saj sta odločitev prepustila Todtu, ki ni bil prisoten. Devet šefov moštev se je nato strinjalo, da če ne pridejo do dogovora s FIO, ne bodo sodelovali na dirki.[11]

Ovinek 13, središče konstroverznosti

Po kratkem predahu se je skupina zbrala v Ecclestonovi pisarni, kjer se je šef Renaulta Flavio Briatore po telefonu pogovarjal z Maxom Mosleyem. Mosley menda je zavrnil vse njihove predloge ter obvestil g. Martina, glavnega predstavnika FIE v ZDA, da če bo potekala kakršna koli neprvenstvena dirka, ali če bo steza kakorkoli spremenjena, so ogroženi vsi motošportni dogotdi pod okriljem FIE v ZDA. FIA je kasneje zanikala, da je Mosley to povedal.[12]

Po izčrpanju vseh njihovih predlogov, so predstavniki Michelina, Stoddart in Bernie Ecclestone - toda ne Colin Kolles iz Jordana - razpravljali, če naj njihovi dirkalniki pripeljejo na štartno vrsto, in se odločili, da bodo sodelovali v ogrevalnem krogu, nato pa pred štartom zapeljali v bokse in odstopili. Stoddart je odšel v Jordanovo garažo in povprašal Kollesa, če bosta njihova dirkača sodelovala na dirki, in izvedel da bodo, čeprav so se pred tem strinjali, da ne bodo dirkali. Po pogovoru s predstavniki Bridgestona in po seznanitvi z vosokimi kaznimi za nedirkanje, se je tudi Stoddart odločil, da bosta rudi njegova dirkača dirkala, toda obljubil je, da bosta odstopila, če Jordana ne bi končala dirke.[11]

Obiskovalcem dirke in televizijskim gledalcem se je štart dirke zdel popolnoma normalen. Vsi dirkalniki so se zvrstili na štartni vrsti in Charlie Whiting je dal zeleno luč za krog za ogrevanje. Vseh dvajset dirkalnikov je normalno speljalo glede na vožnjo skozi prvih dvanajst ovinkov je vse izgledalo normalno, nato pa so vsa Michelinova moštva zapeljala v bokse, tako da so se na štartni vrsti zvrstili le šest dirkalnikikov Ferrarija, Jordana in Minardija.

Poteza moštev, ki so zapeljala na krog za ogrevanje, nato pa nazaj v bokse je razvesnela obiskovalce in televizijske gledalce, saj niso vedeli kaj se dogaja. Slišati je bilo glasno neodobravanje, na stezo pa so celo prileteli nekateri predmeti, televitijski reporterji pa so fanatično poizvedovali kaj se dogaja. Le Peter Windsor, komentator ameriške televizije Speed Channel, je kmalu po štartu lahko sporočil gledalcem podrobnosti. Dirka se je kmalu spremenila v dvoboj Ferrarijev, Michaela Schumacherja in Rubensa Barrichella za zmago, Jordanom, Tiaga Monteira in Naraina Karthikeyana za tretje mesto, in Minardijev, Christijana Albersa in Patricka Friesachera za peto mesto.

Dirka se je odločala v boksih, saj je bilo edino prehitevanje le za krog zaostalih dirkačev. Albers je bil edini na taktiki treh postankov, ostali dirkači pa so se ustavili v boksih dvakrat. Vodilni dirkač se je zamenjal v 26. krogu, ko se je Schumacher iz boksov vrnil za Barrichello, ter v 51. krogu ko je Schumacher po drugih postankih spet prišel v vodstvo, pri tem se je moral Barrichello celo umakniti na travo. Po tem incidentu, ki ga niso preiskali komisarji dirke, sta oba Ferrarija ostala na svojih mestih in z lahkoto dosegla dvojno zmago. Na podelitvi pokalov po dirki, kjer ni bil prisoten noben od napovedanih podeljevalcev pokalov, je Ferrarijevo moštvo hitro in tiho sprejelo pokale ter odšlo, novinec Monteiro pa je proslavljal svojo prvo uvrstitev na stopničkah.[13]

Refusal of coverage

Several TV stations refused to carry the US GP after the retirement of all the Michelin runners. TSN in Canada refused to air the race, and provided only the post-race show. As TSN was airing the race on tape-delay, it just provided the live-to-tape post-race coverage in place of pre-race and race coverage. At the time that the debacle unfolded, TSN was televising the NASCAR Batman Begins 400 at Michigan Speedway.

Several Television channels broadcasted the grand prix. ITV in the United Kingdom decided to screen the race and at the end of broadcast, the channel's anchorman Jim Rosenthal apologised for what viewers saw. The late night highlights show of the grand prix was cancelled.

Italian channel Rai Uno aired the race too, with comentators Gianfranco Mazzoni and Ivan Capelli trying to understand what led to the withdrawal and to explain it to the public. Austrian channel ORF1 broadcasted the entire race as well, citing contractual obligations to do so.

In the United States, Speed Channel was broadcasting the race. As it had no alternative programming to run, and as host broadcaster, would have had to continue to feed the satellite uplink in any event, the decision was made to broadcast the race in its entirety. Commentator Bob Varsha categorized the race as "a travesty," and he and his colleagues spent a great deal of time apologizing to their viewers. Varsha also went on a brief tirade against the spectators who were throwing objects onto the track, as this had been a problem at several NASCAR races in the preceding 18 months.

During the Dutch broadcast of the race, a live interview with Paul Stoddart saw him go on a profanity-laced tirade about the situation, including calling the race a "fucking joke."

German RTL was also broadcasting the race in its entirety. Despite (or, more likely, because of) the no-show on the track it was later said to be one of the races with the most viewers of the whole season.

Aftermath

The race result allowed Michael Schumacher to move from fifth to third in the drivers championship, while Rubens Barrichello moved from sixth to fourth, and the Ferrari team moved from fifth to second in the Constructors Championship. Both Jordan and Minardi scored points, leaving BAR-Honda as the only team not to have scored any points up to that stage of the season. However, these changes in the championship standings were dwarfed by the recriminations over the failure to find a solution which have would allowed the Michelin-shod teams to race.

Bernie Ecclestone, in answer to a question by ITV's Martin Brundle in an interview just before the start of the race, described the future of Formula One in the United States and the future of Michelin in the sport as "not good". He also said that the "incident's not the fault of the teams, to be honest with you."[14]

Many people involved in F1 labelled the race a "farce" and questioned whether a United States Grand Prix would be held again at Indianapolis, or at any other American venue ever again for that matter. David Coulthard said, "It throws into doubt the future of the race in US".[15] Some pointed to the previous disagreements between the teams and Max Mosley (which had led to the threatened creation of the GPWC as an alternative to Formula One) as a critical factor in the failure to reach a compromise and felt that the events at this race had greatly increased the risk of a complete rupture.[16]

Minardi boss Paul Stoddart said immediately after the race that nine teams — all but Ferrari — agreed not to race, and had Jordan not reversed its decision at the last minute, Minardi would also have boycotted the race.[17] In his later, lengthier, statement, he indicated that although it had been Michelin's failure to provide a reliable tyre which had initiated the events, he laid the full blame for the failure to reach some accommodation (which would have allowed a race to happen, for the benefit of the many fans who had paid considerable money for travel and tickets) at the feet of Max Mosley and the FIA, with a small share of the blame going to what he characterized as the obstructionist Ferrari team leader, Jean Todt. He furthermore called for Mosley's resignation.[18]

FIA's reaction

The following day, the FIA published a justification of its refusal to permit a change in tyres or the installation of a chicane.[19] The FIA also summoned the seven Michelin-shod teams before the World Motorsport Council at their headquarters in France, for a hearing on June 29th, to explain their failure to participate, by which they had presumably violated the terms of the Concorde Agreement.[20] It later published copies of the letters sent to each team "in the interests of transparency".[21] They were charged with violating article 151c of the International Sporting Code, which refers to acts prejudicial to the interests of competition or motorsport generally.[22] Specifically, it was charged that they had:

  • Failed to ensure that you had a supply of suitable tyres for the race.
  • Wrongfully refused to allow your cars to start the race
  • Wrongfully refused to allow your cars to race subject to a speed restriction at one corner, which was safe for such tyres as you had available.
  • Combined with other teams to make a demonstration damaging to the image of Formula 1 by pulling into the pits immediately before the start of the race.
  • Failed to notify the stewards of your intention not to race.

On June 22 the FIA produced a press release from Max Mosley, in the form of a question-and-answer session, in an effort to clarify the FIA's stand on the controversy.[23] In it Mosley drew an analogy to a hypothetical situation where the engines from one manufacturer had oil starvation problems due to high lateral loading in one corner, and pointed out that those cars would simply have been forced to run slower as a result. He reiterated that the reason for not installing the chicane was purely that it had never been tested and was thereby deemed unsafe. He pointed out that the alternatives that the FIA suggested were feasible, and wondered why the teams did not use the pitlane as an alternative, especially when, with only six Bridgestone cars, the Michelin teams could still compete for the points scoring seventh and eighth places.

On June 29 the FIA World Motorsport Council found the teams guilty on the first two counts, that is, of not being in possession of suitable tyres for the event, but with strong mitigating circumstances, and that of wrongfully refusing to allow their cars to start the race. The teams were found not guilty of the other three counts. The punishment, however, was not decided, and was not to have been announced until September 14.[24]

On July 22, the FIA World Motorsport Council voted to overturn its previous decision, and exonorated the Michelin teams of all charges. The decision was due to "evidence previously submitted to the FIA Senate",[25] rumoured to be that the Michelin teams could have been held accountable under Indiana state law for knowingly putting others at risk if they had raced.[26]

Compensation

On June 28, Michelin announced that it would offer compensation to all race fans who had purchased tickets for the Grand Prix.[27] By the end of September, the company had issued refund checks through the Speedway ticket office for the price of all tickets for the race. Additionally, Michelin purchased 20,000 tickets for the 2006 United States Grand Prix to be distributed to spectators who renewed their 2005 ticket orders for the event, two additional tickets per order.[28]

In addition to the refunded tickets, there was some discussion about holding a second, non-championship race at Indianapolis. On July 2, at the 2005 French Grand Prix, McLaren team principal Ron Dennis suggested that an additional race could be held at the American circuit after the last official race of the season, in Shanghai. The teams had, apparently, already discussed the idea with Bernie Ecclestone. But the next day Tony George dismissed the possibility: "There will be no race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway this fall."[29] At the 2005 Champ Car World Series Grand Prix of Cleveland, held one week after the US Grand Prix, free admission was granted to all bearers of ticket stubs of the US Grand Prix.[30] -->

Opombe
